Abstract

I will review work from our group showing that while we witness the actions, sensations and emotions of others, we activate neural representations of our own actions, sensations and emotions. I will then present human and animal experiments that show that perturbing these activations interfere with perceiving specific aspects of the actions and emotions of others, and reduces the motivation to help them. Together, this shows that embodied neural representations play a significant role in the non-verbal communication across individuals.
